Against its earlier stance to enforce 100 per cent increment in boarding fees on students of model colleges and upgraded secondary schools in the state starting from this first term of the 2021\2022 academic session, the Lagos State government has tentatively put the new fee now at N35,000 per student per term instead of the earlier controversial N50,000.
The adjustment is announced on Sunday by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, in a statement made available to newsmen by the head of the Public Affairs unit of her ministry, Mr Ganiu Lawal.
According to her, the new fee regime would be on an experimental level for two terms beginning with this term after which the fee would be reviewed for possible readjustment.
She said that was the agreement reached by the ministry and the state house of assembly with the parents of students of the concerned schools at a meeting recently
She pointed out that no additional fees or levies would be imposed on students of those schools within the said period so that parents would not be overburdened and also to allow for a true reflection of the workability of the new boarding fee regime.
While disclosing that the menu list of the students would also be reviewed and standardised in terms of necessary nutrition, she said schools are equally expected to incorporate local menu including seasonal foods as available.
Mrs Adefisayo, who had consistently pointed out that boarding fees in model colleges which had been on the same N25,000 for the past 18 years had been heavily subsidised by the state government, declared that representatives of parent’s body would now be incorporated into the boarding house committee to ensure inclusive supervision of the system.
She however reiterated that students of those schools would resume in batches starting with SS2 students on Sunday(yesterday) while the newly admitted JSS1 and other returning students would resume on the 2nd and 9th of October, respectively.
She assured all the stakeholders that the state government would continue to provide quality and quantitative education for the people of the state.
