The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said the 4-year-old girl identified as Faridat Shittu and several others, whose house got involved in a gas explosion in Lagos on Sunday, are in critical condition at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
The girl and six other members of her family were reportedly rushed to the teaching hospital yesterday after a cooking gas explosion ravaged the residence situated at No. 1, Odubanwo Streer, Off Olaniyi Street, Gbinrinmi, in Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
Disclosing this on its official X handle on Monday, NEMA said the girl and her family members are undergoing burn care at the teaching hospital.
According to the agency, the girl’s grandmother, in severe pain, explained that an attempt to control flaming oil while frying meat led to the gas explosion.
“The girl was rescued by community members. The incident left 11 families homeless as the entire 14-room building collapsed,” the agency stated.
It added that “the landlord of the house, Pa Femi Odubanwo Solomon, narrowly escaped and is currently staying in a church.”
The agency also disclosed that in a separate incident, a market fire at Abule Egba affected numerous shops and vehicles, but no injuries were reported.
“The Chairman of Ojokoro LCDA and his medical team are providing assistance to the victims,” the agency added.
