Centre for International Education (CIE) of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete has identified challenges confronting the nation’s local businesses in achieving success in the global competitive markets.
Speaking at the second edition of the workshop, themed, Unveiling the guru: understanding and overcoming challenges of international business, organized by the Centre for International Education (CIE) in Ilorin on Thursday, the Director, CIE, Dr Issa Abdulraheem, said that human capital; a crucial resource and decisive factor of production in local and international business must be well packaged to give value to individuals that will be exported abroad.
The university don, who said that a well-packaged human capital resource would also reduce brain drain and other social vices committed by some Nigerians abroad.
In the same vein, the chairman of the occasion, Professor Ibrahim Adam of the University of Ilorin, said that not many local businesses in Nigeria have the understanding of challenges confronting international business, not to talk of possessing the capacity to overcome such.
“The need for businesses to be competitive and break into new markets is perhaps an issue deserving the most crucial attention at this time when the nation’s economy is on a downward trend with slow economic growth, high unemployment, dwindling revenue and infrastructural deficits.
“Thus, more than ever before, the nation is now in dire need of more innovative competitive businesses which have capacities to increase the nation’s exports profile, generate more jobs to minimize youth restiveness and cause a significant increase in the country’s foreign exchange earnings”, he said.
The director of the CIE expatiated on the aim of the Centre, saying that the Centre aimed to build a workforce in the state that will have exportable skills, adding that the skill will assist them in performing their duties efficiently and effectively.
“Based on the paucity of funds, it is practically impossible to send staff for international training. The Centre will collaborate with the state government and private sector to train staff that requires international skills. We will be bringing scholars from abroad to train our staff thereby reducing the cost and stress of travelling abroad.
“The purpose of the workshop is to identify gurus in international connections both in the private and public sectors. These gurus will be able to connect and link KWASU to the global world both in industries and academic institutions”, he said.
The programme, which had Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq as the first identified guru in its first edition last year, also identified Group Managing Director/CEO of KAM Holding Limited, Dr Kamoru Yusuf, as a recipient of this edition.
Dr Yusuf, who urged the government at all levels to adopt a policy framework that will enhance the training of Nigerian youths in the areas of skill acquisition, science and technology, said that the measure would transform the nation positively within a short period of time.
Yusuf who is also a member of the National Council of the Manufacturers of Nigeria warned parents to desist from exporting their children abroad at tender ages, adding that such a decision is dangerous to their existence in future times.
He added that children should be given adequate attention towards making them acquire background/basic knowledge from their nation in order to inject the principle of patriotism and morality into them.
“Science and Technology is the only way to develop our nation and government should ensure that youths are encouraged to dwell more in skilful technology-inclined careers in order to explore the numerous opportunities created by industrialists in Nigeria. We are exporting skills and paying high when we have many youths who have studied courses that are not relevant to industrialisation.
“We may be black in colour but we are not black in our brains. I have participated in many exhibitions where I have won many awards and made Nigeria and the entire black race proud,” Dr Yusuf added.
In his remarks, the Deputy Governor of Kwara State, Mr Kayode Alabi, commended Dr Yusuf for his contributions and commitments to nation-building by creating jobs among other supports to the masses.
He urged the gathering to imbibe the culture of entrepreneurship and business development in order to encourage the youths and Nigerian populace at large.
