A student of Kwara State Polytechnic (Kwarapoly), Ilorin has been reportedly killed and two others sustained severe injuries in a rival cult clash in Ilorin, on Thursday.
The Tribune Online gathered that the clash was between suspected members of Eiye and Ayee fraternities at the Institute of Technology (I.O.T), located at the mini campus area of the polytechnic.
The identity of the slain suspected cultist is not yet known at the time of filing this report.
It was also learnt that the clash started when three suspected members of the Eiye group were reportedly attacked by members of the rival group while inside their car at the mini campus.
The attacks of the suspected cultists in the car reportedly prompted retaliation as the students were seen mobilising themselves for a counterattack.
The development saw the cult members freely using dangerous weapons such as axes and cutlasses to attack themselves in broad daylight.
The situation, which spilt over to major parts of the metropolis, spread to the Surulere area while many people were seen scampering for safety.
The development also forced many offices including commercial banks operating around the area to hurriedly close their gates.
The two students, who sustained severe injuries were seen being rushed to a nearby private hospital in the neighbouring Adewole area to save their lives while the remains of the deceased was also evacuated and taken to the mortuary.
“One of the Eiye group died on the spot while the other two have been rushed to the nearest hospital,” a source said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state Police command, Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the incident, saying that security had been beefed up around the areas to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
“Police have been deployed to the affected areas to maintain peace and security. They are still there as I speak. I will give details about the arrest and other related issues later,” he said.
