The Kogi State Coordination office of the Agro-Processing Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) Project has begun the training of 102 persons with disabilities and special needs as beneficiaries under the APPEALS Women and Youth Empowerment programme (WYEP).
Declaring the training programme open the Kogi State Deputy Governor and chairman state steering committee of the APPEALS project in the state, Chief Edward David Onoja said the state had achieved milestones in meeting the initial stipulated conditions for participating in the World Bank Assisted APPEALS project which has created the opportunity for youths in the state to be empowered in agricultural activities.
He advised the beneficiaries to make the state proud by utilizing judiciously the empowerment being facilitated by the APPEALS project in the state.
He reiterated the continued support of the state government towards the successful implementation of the project in the state.
The APPEALS state project coordinator, Dr. Sanni Abdullahi Ozomata said the long-awaited training activity for people with disabilities and special needs has commenced after the necessary logistics and preparations were done to guarantee a smooth training activity for the beneficiaries.
He said even though they are the last batch of beneficiaries to be trained, modalities have been put in place to ensure the establishment of their agribusinesses in good time.
He informed the gathering that the project is already collaborating with academic institutions within the state to enable the clustering of beneficiaries in their premises to ensure continuity and sustainability.
He urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the empowerment process to grow their agribusinesses to become employers of labour and contribute to the growth of the economy of the state.
He appreciated the head of the Women and Youth/livelihood Specialist in the state and other staff of the state coordinating office for their untiring efforts towards ensuring the quick implementation of the women and youth empowerment programme.
The Managing Director, Kogi State Agricultural Development Project, Mallam Bello Ogirima advised the beneficiaries to key properly into the project and make the best out of it.
He told them that they are about to be empowered with a certain amount that would make a difference in their lives and that they should be thankful to the governor and the APPEALS project for availing this opportunity to the beneficiaries.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Provost of the College of Agriculture, Kabba, Asociate Professor Mrs. Roseline Yemisi Olobatoke underscored the importance of the training exercise and commended the effort of the state government in keying into the vision of the federal government in redirecting the nation towards agriculture.
She appreciated the state government for finding the institution worthy to host the training activity.
It would be recalled that in August 2019, the state coordination office screened and thereafter selected a total of 1700 APPEALS –WYEP beneficiaries in Kogi state, a total of 1608 of the beneficiaries have been trained in their chosen agribusiness enterprises in line with their priority value.
Consequently, beneficiaries’ business plans have been developed and approved by the World Bank with the disbursement of funds to their respective accounts already in progress.
