Kano State Commissioner of Education, Dr Ali Haruna Makoda, has urged proprietors of private schools to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations governing private school operations.
He made the call while receiving the executive members of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Kano Chapter, who paid a courtesy visit to his office.
Dr Makoda emphasised the need for private school owners to work closely with the State Private and Voluntary Schools Institutions Board to achieve quality education.
While addressing the issue of multiple taxation of private schools, the Commissioner pledged to collaborate and develop proper solutions to tackle the problem.
Makoda revealed that the administration of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf is developing new policies aimed at providing a conducive learning environment for both public and private institutions across the state.
According to him, “The Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is passionate about education, which led to the declaration of a State of Emergency on Education.”
He explained that the state government has implemented several educational programmes, including the distribution of learning and instructional materials to over 800,000 public schools, the provision of 789,000 school uniforms to pupils in 7,092 public schools across the 44 local government areas, and the improvement of infrastructure to enhance learning and teaching conditions.
The Commissioner further reiterated the government’s commitment to working with individuals or groups willing to contribute to the enhancement of the state’s education sector.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Kano State Ministry of Education, Alhaji Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, and made available to the press in Kano on Thursday.
Earlier, the State Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Kano Chapter, Alhaji Imam Ahmed Zubair, stated that their visit to the Commissioner’s office was to express support and solidarity with the government in recognition of its commitment to repositioning the state’s education sector.
He noted that the association serves as the umbrella body and apex organisation for private school owners in Nigeria, created to promote the welfare of proprietors and deliver quality education across the country.
Alhaji Imam Zubair commended Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his historic budget allocation to the education sector—29.75% for 2024 and 31.5% for 2025—describing the effort as unprecedented in the history of educational development in Kano.
The Chairman also highlighted areas requiring government intervention to improve the performance of private schools in the state. These demands include the provision of permanent office accommodation, addressing the issue of multiple taxation of private schools by harmonising payments through a single authority, and developing policies for private school operators regarding rent issues.
