Join politics to cleanse its dirtiness, Makinde urges religious leaders

The Prelate Emeritus, Methodist Church, Nigeria, Dr Sunday Ola Makinde has urged religious leaders and their followers to abandon uplifting the toga of politics being dirty but rather should run for political offices with a view to cleansing the political system.

Makinde gave this charge in his exhortation at the dedication of the Secretariat building of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo state chapter, in Ibadan, on Thursday.

Hinging his call on dynamism in the world, Makinde held that the nation’s political system yearned for the involvement of honest Christians and Muslims.

He, therefore, urged religious leaders to encourage their followers alike to participate in politics by starting to vie for Chairmanship, councillorship positions and move up to contest for higher positions.

While lauding the Pastor Benjamin Akanmu led Oyo CAN for accomplishing the Secretariat project, he urged Christians and Muslims to eschew doctrinal differences and religious bitterness.

He prayed that the edifice serves to unite Christians and foster togetherness while cautioning against the use of the building for immoral or secular engagements.

Makinde decried that some Christians had foisted reproach on the body of Christ, through their ungodly activities, warning that such persons will face the consequences of their actions on the judgement day.

In his remarks, Chairman, Oyo CAN, Pastor Benjamin Akamu also harped on religious harmony among blocs to foster the progress of the Christian fold.

The event saw awards of excellence presented to Governor Seyi Makinde; CAN President, Reverend Dr Supo Ayokunle; Emeritus Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ibadan, Reverend Dr Alaba Job; Prelate Emeritus, Methodist Church, Nigeria, Dr Sunday Makinde; Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ibadan, Most Reverend Gabriel Abegunrin; Presiding Bishop, Rehoboth Cathedral, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun; Founder, Agbala Daniel Church, Archbishop Dorcas Olaniyi among others.
