Isese Assembly parleys film, skit makers against denigration of Yoruba belief system

The Isese Assembly, also known as the Isese Welfare Association (IWA), which represents the Isese Community in Nigeria, has announced its readiness to organize a one-day interactive session with stakeholders in the film industry and skit makers in southwestern Nigeria.

The targeted participants for the event include actors, directors, producers, scriptwriters, filmmakers, skit makers, content creators, and marketers, who will engage with leading and practicing Oniseses on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Onasode Hall, International Conference Center, University of Ibadan, at 11:00 a.m.

In a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Isese Welfare Association (IWA), Awo Ifatayo Ayomo Awolade, the body stated that it has become essential to convene this gathering in order to reorganize the Isese community at large in Yorubaland, fostering new innovations and capacities to address challenges facing Yoruba divinatory practices, traditions, spirituality, heritage, and religion, collectively known as Isese.

According to the statement, the event will be hosted by the esteemed Yoruba elder, High Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, the Araba Awo of Osogbo, Osun State.

“On behalf of the Isese Community at large, the Isese Welfare Association (IWA), also popularly known as the Isese Assembly, is organizing a significant and inclusive one-day interactive session with critical stakeholders in the Nigerian movie industry, particularly in Yorubaland. These stakeholders include actors, directors, producers, scriptwriters, filmmakers, skit makers, content creators, and marketers, who will interact with leading Oniseses in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reorganize the Isese community across Yorubaland. The objective is to foster new innovations and sustainable capacities to address the contemporary challenges impacting Yoruba divinatory practices, traditions, spirituality, heritage, and religion, known as Isese.”

Awolade further emphasized that the symposium will provide participants with an opportunity to discuss ways to curb the denigration and misrepresentation of the Yoruba belief system while establishing a sustainable platform for periodic consultation and collaboration to preserve Yoruba culture, tradition, and heritage through filmmaking and theater.

“The primary goal of this interactive session is to address the denigration of Isese and urge stakeholders to put an end to the misrepresentation of our beloved belief system. Additionally, it aims to establish a sustainable channel for regular consultation and collaboration to preserve and promote our rich culture, tradition, and heritage through filmmaking and theatrical practices.

“This event is scheduled for September 12, 2024, at Onasode Hall, International Conference Center, University of Ibadan, Oyo Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, starting at 11:00 a.m. sharp.

“This important event will be hosted by Olóyè Àgbà (High Chief) Ifáyẹmí Àyìndé Ẹlẹ́buìbọn, the Àràbà Awo of Òṣogbo, Osun State,” he concluded.
