The human body certainly needs some amount of sugar with which to function. Therefore, what most nutrition experts advise is not a total avoidance of sugar but sugar in moderation since an excess can lead to metabolic problems such excessive weight gain and adverse effects on the heart and the blood vessels. Research has confirmed that adults who consume about 18 teaspoons of added sugar daily (300 Calories) stand the risk of developing cardiovascular problems. The biggest sources of sugar for adults were found to be soft drinks, fruit juices, desserts and candy (a single 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola, for example, has almost 10 teaspoons of sugar). Although everyone’s tolerance for sugar is different, people are usually advised to follow the World Health Organization’s guidelines, which recommend that adults and children consume no more than about six teaspoons daily of added sugar.
