I am 22 years old. I am from Lagos State. Is there anything wrong in having menstrual flow twice in a month?
Please, help me.
‘Lewa, 0*05******3.
Dear ‘Lewa,
What you need most is full understanding of your cycle. Though I don’t know when you started menstruating, but what is of essence now is facing your situation with the utmost attention it deserves.
Since when have you been having your period twice in a month? If it is just once, there is no reason for you to get so anxious about what went wrong.
Naturally, adult women have their period from 21 to 35 days while teenage girls range from 21 to 45 days. I want to believe you belong to the young woman category. Don’t forget that even if you are a twin, your gene is not likely to be the same with your twin brother or sister, there is always room for individual differences as the cycle varies from month to month and may last for more or fewer days than the previous month or even start earlier or later than it has before.

Based on the above, there is the tendency to have two periods sometimes in a month. If your cycles are on the shorter end, you could have your period at the beginning and end of the month with no reason for fears. But if you experience bleeding outside of your normal cycle and suspect a second period, then it could signpost danger.
From readings, there are two types of bleeding that you have to pay attention to if this is consistent. You have to identify whether what you are referring to as second period is spotting or menstrual bleeding.
Spotting, according to experts, has to do with just a drop of blood that is not enough to fill a pad or tampon and it is usually dark red or brown in colour why menstrual bleeding soaks through a pad every few hours with bright red blood. If you are able to establish what you are experiencing, then you will be able to do the needful so as to tackle the problem.
The possible causes of increased bleeding could be as a result of shortness of your cycle or health related issue that causes vaginal bleeding.
Lack of ovulation known as Anovulation, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism(overactive/underactive thyroid gland), puberty, stress, extreme weight loss or gain, birth control, illness, pregnancy, sexual transmitted infections among other causes are listed to be behind increased bleeding.
‘Lewa, I have only tried to explain in plain language what might have caused your having to menstruate twice a month. What you should do is to take your time to understudy your period in the next two months to see if it is spotting or real bleeding so as to know what to do. But if you are feeling uncomfortable, don’t delay seeing a doctor, I mean a qualified one for proper diagnosis.
You must not take to quacks who will not only add to your concerns but cause irreparable problem for you. Never indulge in getting drugs that are likely to be prescribed by your friends who would have had a similar experience. You are a different entity.
Take care.
