To mark the International Day of the Girl Child, the Rotary Club of Bauchi Central, in collaboration with Alwadata Likeminds Initiative and Kairos Initiative, is donating a total of 240 reusable sanitary pads and the same number of tight-fitted pants to 80 girls of Government Secondary School, Bayara, Bauchi.
The disclosure was made by the President of the Rotary Club of Bauchi Central, Rotarian Pam Dauda while addressing the girls at the school premises on Wednesday.
He explained that the move is to make learning conducive for the girls during their monthly flow, stressing that many of them face difficulties during this period.
According to him, “Today, we are at Government Secondary School, Bayara, to mark the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child and to engage in an activity to commemorate the day. We are celebrating it by doing something that will positively impact the lives of the girls.”
He added, “Today, we are implementing a self-esteem partnership programme where we will be providing reusable sanitary pads to adolescent girls for their use. We have realised that it is very difficult for them to afford conventional pads, which they discard after use.”
“We have produced reusable sanitary pads that can be recycled and used for a very long period of time. We are giving them to 80 girls in this school, which can last them for at least six months if handled well,” he added.
The President of the Rotary Club of Bauchi Central emphasised the need for a safe space for the girl child, stating, “Most of the girls in the schools use one toilet for both boys and girls. After this project, we are engaging in a WASH programme that will address the privacy and safety of the girl child.”
He stressed that “we will also provide handwashing facilities for their use. Girls’ hygiene is crucial, and it is not fair for the girl child to share toilets with boys. We are working towards ensuring that we provide these facilities for the girl child.”
According to him, “The Rotary Club of Bauchi Central is also embarking on toilet facilities in schools in 3 LGAs of the state. We are submitting this to Rotary District 9125 for further action.
Regarding feedback from the previous exercise, he said, “We realised that the girls appreciated the reusable sanitary pads, but they faced challenges because they did not have pants to use along with the pads.
This time around, we are providing three sanitary pads with sets of pants so that they can use them. That is one part of it. We also discovered the lack of toilets for the girls, and we are working to address this issue.”
He emphasised, “The girl child is a priority for us. She is our mother, our sister, and the one who will shape Nigeria’s future.
At this point in time, we want them to keep pace with the digital world. Although things are challenging, time is moving, and we have to keep up.”
One of the female students at the school, Aisha Isma’il, lamented that the menstrual cycle has put many girls under much stress, causing them to be frequently absent from school due to a lack of appropriate resources.
She added that the monthly flow period has become a stressor for the girls, calling for action to bring relief to the girl child and help them overcome the pressure of the monthly flow.
Aisha Isma’il also appealed for more toilets for the girls in the school, as currently there are no toilets for them, making it difficult for them to find safe spaces.
Also speaking, a male student, Emmanuel Augustine, lamented the condition of girls in the school, especially during their monthly flow, which often keeps them out of school for the duration, negatively impacting their education.
He also emphasised the need for more toilets for the girls, stressing that they require privacy and safe spaces in the school to change their pads freely whenever needed.
