Insecurity: I’m engaging in community efforts to complement Gov Agbu — Taraba lawmaker

Hon. Abubakar John Tonko, the Taraba State House of Assembly member representing the Takun (I) constituency, stated on Tuesday that he is engaging in community efforts with his constituency to complement Governor Agbu Kefas’s efforts to end the persistent killings in the local government.

Tonko disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Wukari and explained that the idea is to help fast-track the resolution of disputes between farmers and herders.

According to the lawmaker, investigations have revealed that resource allocation is the main reason behind the disputes between farmers and herders in the area. He and other critical stakeholders are engaging in community efforts to complement Governor Agbu Kefas’s initiatives to promptly resolve the disputes.

“I salute the quick response of Governor Kefas to the general insecurity in Takum local government and other parts of Taraba. As a constituency, we are engaging in community efforts to complement Governor Agbu’s initiatives in ending the disputes between farmers and herders without delay.

“We understand that resource allocation is the root cause of the disputes, so we are doing our best to put an end to the matter and foster a peaceful relationship between the two groups. The conflict primarily stems from the agitation for resource allocation, where farmers are seeking land for farming while herders are looking for land for grazing.

“With what has happened over the weekend, we expect to see meaningful progress in the discussion around peace, particularly in the allocation of resources, namely land.

“We also appreciate the proactiveness of the state governor in heeding our call to take the issue of insecurity seriously and providing relief materials to those displaced,” the lawmaker disclosed.

The assembly member also commended Governor Kefas for his assessment visit to the Kashimbila Federal Government’s 40MW power station. He emphasized that power is a crucial factor in boosting business activities, which in turn generates revenue for the development of Taraba State and Nigeria as a whole.
