Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, on Tuesday, paid a condolence visit to the Imo State Police Command to commiserate with families of slain officers during the recent mayhem in the state.
His visit to the Command came barely a few weeks after peace has gradually returned to the state after it was under debilitating attacks by “unknown gunmen,” with many targets on policemen and state assets.
The governor, while addressing officers of the command, lauded them for their dogged fight and resilience in bringing normalcy back to the state.
He assured of the state government’s partnership with the police to engender peace in the land, through the provision of sufficient logistics that would assist them in carrying out their legitimate duties of protection of lives and properties.
Uzodinma also paid a special tribute to the Commissioner of Police and his gallant officers for putting their lives on the line to ensure adequate security of the people in the state.
He reiterated the government’s resolve to institute an Insurance Policy for the families of the slain police officers who died in the course of their job.
The governor charged officers of the command, as the only people licensed by law to bear arms, not to allow themselves to be murdered in cold blood by the hoodlums or bandits.
“The Police is the only people licensed by law to carry a gun; you should not allow the bandits or hoodlums to come into your stations to murder you first in a cold blood,” he reiterated.
While declaring the state as now safe, the Governor thanked God and the security agencies for securing the state, promising to motivate officers to bring out their best.
The Governor also stressed the need to charge all the suspects arrested during the melee in the state to court, vowing that government will follow up the prosecutions.
He directed the officers of the command to go after fleeing criminals, who have retired to rural communities to terrorize the people.
Meanwhile, Governor Uzodinma has advised politicians, who derive pleasure in murdering people, to repent.
He expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari and the IGP for all their supports to the state and the police.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Abutu Yaro, described the visit of the governor as the first in the history of the state.
The CP, who said that the visit would boost the officers’ morale, assured the governor of the command’s commitment to the security of lives and properties in the state.
