Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has granted pardon to four prison inmates saying the pardons were granted for reasons of good conduct by the prisoners with effect from the different dates of their sentences.
The governor who disclosed this while speaking at the 61st Independence Day parade at Rwang Pam Stadium Jos said the pardons were granted in exercising the power conferred on him in Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended), after due consultation with the State Advisory Council on Prerogative Of Mercy.
Those granted the pardon were Obinna John, Sagir Mukaila, Teryile Ishi and Daniel Honok.
The governor who said the 2021 independence celebration is being celebrated at a time when Nigeria is going through so many challenges in virtually every sector added that the situation should not make Nigerians despair or lose hope in the country, or ignore the giant strides that it has made over the years.
“On this day, therefore, we have to restate our resolve to building a nation where the ideals of our founding fathers will not only prevail but the major things that enhance our unity and cohesion are emphasised.
“Nigeria remains a country full of potentials and blessed with so much human and material resources that make it an envy of the world. Let us, therefore, ask ourselves what makes stagnated our progress and made us operate below our capacity.”
According to him, corruption, nepotism, intolerance, indiscipline and disregard for the rule of law have created confusion in national identity and the pursuit of national aspirations adding that the younger generation appears confused about what the future holds for them.
He added that the time has come for every Nigerian to arise and do everything possible to remove these and other impediments, therefore, in major stumbling blocks for national growth.
” Everyone, particularly the leadership has a role to play and share in, the responsibility for setbacks of the past. This is the time to move ahead and take our destiny into our hands.”
He, therefore, expressed optimism that Nigeria shall not only overcome its challenges but also become a great nation to be admired and celebrated by the entire world.
