Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie has clarified that her recent health concerns stemmed from a thyroid issue, not cancer, revealing that she had her thyroid removed.
Addressing the rumours in a social media video, the 40-year-old star thanked fans for their messages and prayers, insisting that she is in good health.
“Thank you so much to all of you who have been calling and sending messages and prayers,” she said.
“But I do not have cancer. I had a cancer scare, which led to a swelling on my neck and issues with my thyroid. My doctor recommended removal, and I am now perfectly okay.”
Mercy explained that a clip from her cooking show, Mercy’s Menu, had been taken out of context. “They cut the clip,” she noted.
“I said I had a cancer scare—it means I had this swelling on my neck, and my doctor felt it was something serious. I had problems with my thyroid. I’m perfectly okay.”
In a separate discussion with veteran actress Joke Silva, Mercy revealed the extent of her journey: “I had a cancer scare, and I had my thyroid removed.
“It was quite a journey for us, especially as my youngest was only six months old at the time. The medical team explained that I would require lifelong medication and warned me about potential side effects.”
She reflected on adjusting to her new normal: “We kept saying, ‘This is the new us; let’s get the surgery done.’ Now, I’m reconciling with my weight loss and the changes to my life. I’ve accepted that this is where we are, and I’m learning to thrive in this new comfort zone.”
Mercy concluded by urging the public to “go back and watch the clip” in full and avoid spreading misinformation.
“I am fine. I do not have cancer, in Jesus’ name,” she affirmed before signing off with gratitude for her supporters’ concern.
