If you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you might be worried about taking medication to bring your numbers down. Lifestyle plays an important role in treating your high blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you might avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication. These healthy lifestyle changes include, weight loss, regular exercise (30 minutes exercise daily can lower the BP about 5 to 8 units), eating a healthy diet rich in grains, fruits and vegetables, reduction of sodium in your diet by not adding extra salt to your cooked food, limiting the amount of alcohol you drink, quitting smoking and cutting back on caffeine. In addition, since chronic stress may contribute to high blood pressure, it is also very important for you to reduce your stress, monitor your blood pressure and see your doctor regularly.
