In this article, I explore the various ways in which technology can impact our mental health, both positively and negatively — and also discuss strategies for managing these effects.
One way that technology has impacted on our mental health positivity is the ease in the communication process it has created through the use of social media and online platforms. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people turned to social media and video chat to stay in touch with loved ones and maintained that sense of community and togetherness despite the social distancing policy. These platforms have also provided a sense of support and understanding, allowing individuals to share their experiences and feelings with others who may be going through similar challenges.
Another positive impact technology has had on our mental health is through the use of software applications (alternatively called apps) and websites that offer mental health resources and support. These can include tools for tracking mood, managing stress and anxiety, and providing information and resources for various mental health conditions. Many of these tools are also available for free or at a low cost, making them accessible to a wide range of individuals. Social media has also helped in reducing the feeling of depression in individuals as there are many entertaining contents that can help you escape any psychological stress for some moments.
However, just like everything else has an advantage and disadvantage, it’s important to note that technology has also affected our mental health negatively.
Addiction to social media is one negative effect that many individuals battle with. They feel anxious and depressed whenever they do not have access to their technological devices or social media and this can take a toll on their manual health
Social media has also affected the self-esteem of its users greatly. Studies have shown that excessive use of social media can lead to feelings of inadequacy and create a desire to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty and success. This has led to the development of low self-esteem in many individuals and this has contributed to the development of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. Another negative impact of technology on mental health is the effect of constant multitasking and information overload. With the constant stream of notifications and alerts from our devices, it can be difficult to fully focus on just one task or activity. The constant stream of information and stimuli can make it difficult to process and prioritize what is most important and this can lead to individuals feeling overwhelmed and stressed.
Balancing the use of technology and social media with our other day-to-day life activities is crucial to maintaining a good state of mental health. Therefore, to stay afloat of this, here are some of the ways we can achieve that;

It is important to establish boundaries around your technology use and make sure you’re not overusing it, also try to limit the amount of time you spend scrolling through social media feeds and comparing yourself to others. Remember that what you see on social media is often a highly curated and a filtered version of reality. You can achieve this by setting limits on the amount of time you spend on social media or other apps, and taking regular breaks from screens to give your eyes and mind a rest. Consider using tools like screen time limits or apps that track your tech usage to help you stay on track.
