PROFESSIONALS in the education sector have explained how technology can help Nigeria to tackle various challenges thwarting development in the sector.

The trio of professor of Science Education, University of Lagos (UNILAG), and Uchenna Udeani; an award-winning public school teacher, Soji Megbowon and practice Lead, Education, CcHub Limited, Nissi Madu gave the explanation at an event put together by Mastercard Foundation, in conjunction with CcHub Limited.

The three were all panelists at the monthly event, titled: Top Education Challenges Technology Can Address.

A statement by the organisers said the programme was designed to facilitate critical conversations on the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning in the country.

Speaking, Professor Uchenna said technology could be used to track learning process and access teaching aids as well as open door to a plethora of information on digital and through internet connectivity.

He noted that technology is helping greatly in addressing the challenges associated with infrastructural gap in schools, citing how the conduct of examinations online helps in reducing malpractices including impersonation cases in schools.

On his part, Mr Megbowon stressed that technology has become crucial for teachers, particularly teachers in rural communities, given the number of training opportunities that abound in the digital space.

He cited examples of the Lagos State government’s teacher training programme in partnership with Microsoft during the COVID-19 general lockdown.

Similarly, the third panelist, Madu affirmed that technology is also being used to facilitate continuous professional development for teachers including those in rural communities.

She added that technology had equally helped teachers to connect and collaborate with others to solve common problems.
