Former vice-chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Professor Kayode Oyesiku, has given some practical steps that Nigeria would need to take to enable it to attain the Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs) projects of the United Nations by the Year 2030.
He said they are numerous but listed the right implementation of agricultural policies geared towards mechanised farming, and the building of strong infrastructural facilities, healthcare institutions, human capacity development, and the revival of vocational and technical education as most significant of them all.
Prof Oyesiku gave this hint at Babacock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, while delivering a paper on “Sustainable Development and Nigeria’s March to the Future,” recently.
He was the guest speaker at the event, tagged “2nd Babcock University Public Affairs Forum.”
SDGs are a collection of 17 global goals designed by the UN to be a blueprint for every country to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by the Year 2030 and these include No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good health and well-being, quality education, clean water and sanitation, gender equality and so forth.
The guest speaker however, said even though, the implementation of these goals in Nigeria is still unclear, there is need to entrench them into the psyche of the citizens.
He argued that it is only when people understand the goals that they would be able to stand for them and also support the government, policy makers and implementer and lawmakers and other partnering institutions to bring various policies into social-economic values for people.
Oyesiku, a professor of development studies, said he is however hopeful that even though there is no much at the moment to show for the economic growth recovery programmes of the current administration, something tangible can still be achieved if government is more determined in its approach towards the SDGs projects.
