The Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG) is worried about reported breaches of public peace by the Kano State Government, calling for investigations into actions that have led to the loss of lives in the state.
It said the state had constantly been under tension owing to the failure of the government to comply with security directives on the maintenance of law and order.
“Recently, the Kano State Police Commissioner issued a lawful ban on all public activities during Eid celebrations, citing credible intelligence to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order.
“This directive was a necessary measure to protect lives and property.
“However, Governor Abba Kabir and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi openly defied this ban, proceeding with an unauthorised horse-riding event that resulted in the tragic loss of lives and left many injured”, it stated.
GIGG recalled that similar tragic incidents took place in 2023 when several lives were lost as the government carried out the demolition of buildings in Kano, and another round of demolitions it ordered recently in Rimin Zakara, “claiming more lives.”
The group called on the people of Kano to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their leaders, noting that the state deserves governance that prioritises the welfare and safety of its citizens.
