The Federal Government of Nigeria has re-emphasised the need for effective partnership with states and local government as well as private sectors in order to maximise the economic benefit of the nation’s water resources
The Minister for Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, stated this in Sokoto during the Sensitization Workshop on implementation of the 2013 National water resources Master plan for the stakeholders in the North-West geopolitical zone.
He said the overall sector development is being guided by the national water resources Master plan and as such it’s implementation which has begun is expected to be in.partnership with states and local government as well as other private sector partners.
The Minister who was represented at the event by a deputy director Planning of the ministry, Mrs Ruth Mela Audu-Nunghe, said “this workshop is therefore essential as it is one of the bold steps taken by the present management to create awareness with the relevant ministries, departments and agencies at the Federal, state levels well as the critical stakeholders on the content of the current national water resources Master plan.
He said the master plan proposed activities participation of states in the irrigation subsector.
“Therefore states were expected to massively invest in the sector through the development of irrigation infrastructure for effective utilisation of water impounded in dam reservoirs as well as facilitate the process of access to land.
The Minister recalled that the first national water resources Master plan was developed by the ministry in collaboration with Japan International Cooperative Agency in 1995.
He said the aim of optimisation of the nation’s water resources as well as financial and economic investment options in water resources development in order to achieve accelerated growth, integrated and coordinated water resources development and management agricultural production and food security.
Officials of relevant ministries, departments and agencies from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states were all present at the sensitisation workshop and they were all expected to make presentations and contributions that will form parts of inputs for the expected review of the master plan come 2022.
