…as Reps committee backs crackdown
The House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has endorsed the ongoing efforts of the Corps to crack down on number plate-related offenses in the country.
This endorsement comes as the Corps recorded a staggering 7,798 arrests for number plate-related offenses in just two months.
This information was shared in a statement made available to newsmen, in Abuja, by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide.
According to the statement, the Chairman of the Committee, Honourable Abiodun Adesida, expressed his appreciation for the FRSC’s efforts to combat this issue during a meeting with the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and members of the Committee in the lower chamber of the National Assembly.
The meeting was prompted by concerns over the noticeable proliferation of fake vehicle number plates in the country, which poses a significant threat to public safety.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted the FRSC’s focus on addressing critical issues affecting road safety and national security.
The Corps Marshal briefed the Committee members on the measures being implemented to target fake vehicle registration numbers, despite facing serious resistance from vehicle owners using such fraudulent number plates.
He assured the Committee of his commitment to improving the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Portal, ensuring that no vehicle with a fake registration is allowed to be driven on Nigerian roads.
According to the statement, while speaking on the necessity of the ongoing clampdown, the Corps Marshal informed the Committee that FRSC’s statistics revealed a disturbing trend of number plate-related offences, with many motorists flouting the law by using fake or unauthorized number plates.
This trend according to the Corps Marshal, posed significant security risks, as it hindered efforts to track and identify vehicles involved in crimes by security agencies.
He appreciated the support of the National Assembly, describing it as a significant milestone in the battle against fake number plates.
He beckoned on them to work with the FRSC by strengthening existing laws and regulations that will ensure that offenders are brought to justice.
It added that the Corps Marshal further commended the National Assembly for its commitment to road safety and national security and urged all Nigerians to support FRSC’s efforts by obtaining genuine number plates and reporting any instances of fake number plates to the nearest FRSC Command.
