Four US Presidents who refused to take annual salaries

US Presidents who refused to accept their salaries are a rare breed. Only a few have voluntarily given up their presidential paychecks.

In this article, TRIBUNE ONLINE did a rundown on the four presidents who refused to take annual salaries in US history:

1. Herbert Hoover

The 31st President of the United States, Hoover, was already wealthy when he took office and donated his salary to various charities.

2. John F. Kennedy

As one of the richest Americans at the time, JF Kennedy donated his entire presidential salary to charity.

3. Donald Trump

Trump promised during his 2016 campaign that he wouldn’t accept the presidential salary, and he followed through on that promise, donating his quarterly paychecks to different government agencies.

4. George Washington

Although he initially refused a salary, Washington eventually accepted $25,000 per year after Congress insisted that the presidency should not be reserved for only the wealthy.

NB

It’s worth noting that while these presidents declined their salaries, they still received other forms of compensation, such as expense accounts and travel allowances.
