A non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Well Being Foundation Africa (WBFA) has donated food items and over N300,000 cash to an indigent mother of triplets in Ilorin, Kwara State for upkeep of the family.
Mother of the one-year-old triplet boys, Mrs. Balkis Mohammed, who said she already had three girls before the birth of the triplets, said her family was overwhelmed by feeding and upkeep of the children and had to cry out for help to various organisations and government for succour.
Mrs. Mohammed, former non-teaching staff of a private nursery school and her husband, Mallam Aliyu Mohammed Buhari, a teacher in a public school; United Community Secondary School, Taiwo Isale, Ilorin, who appreciated the gesture, said the WBFA was the only organisation that responded to their cry for assistance, among others that were contacted.
The family, who said that schooling of two of the girls was stopped due to financial difficulties, adding that private school of the eldest child was changed to less- paying public school for financial reasons.
Mallam Buhari said his grandparents actually pressurised him on the need to have a male child before the eventual birth of the triplets.
He added that he and his wife tried to abort pregnancy of the triplets, just as he had made up his mind not to have any other children after the three girls.
The WBFA lead midwife, Mrs. Komolafe Oyinlola, said the gesture was part of the foundation’s efforts at reducing maternal mortality to the barest minimum.
‘’We got to know of her predicament through one of our WhatsApp platforms we created for pregnant women and mothers under our Mama Care programme, and we swung into action immediately.
‘’Our Mama Care programme is targeted at pregnant women and children to care for them and ensure their wellbeing. This takes us to over 14 health facilities in the state on daily basis for antenatal and postnatal classes for pregnant women and lactating mothers. We also render support for those mothers who experience one difficulty or the other after delivery,” she said.
Mrs. Komolafe, who lectured the mother of the triplets to embark on family planning methods suitable for her, including her husband, in order to ensure gaps are created among their children, also urged her to ensure that the children get complete immunisation.
The WBFA Programmes Lead, Kehinde Akinsola, said that earlier visit made to residence of the family located at Olorunsogo-Sawmill community, Ilorin, afforded the organisation the chance to determine the necessary intervention, adding that it was assumed that the children were still very little with the picture sent onto the WhatsApp platform of the WBFA.
