Over 2,000 farmers from the Ondo North senatorial district have benefited from a fertiliser distribution organised by the lawmaker representing the district at the Senate, Pastor Jide Ipinsagba.
The distribution was deemed necessary to enhance self-sufficiency in food production.
During the distribution event, Ipinsagba expressed that empowering the farmers was one of his electoral promises.
He emphasised that this initiative aimed to bring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agricultural agenda closer to the grassroots.
Ipinsagba, who was represented by his Legislative Aide, Hon. Aladetimehin Olusola, urged the farmers to cultivate more land with food and cash crops to meet the demands of the people and ensure their families were well-fed.
He highlighted that the free distribution of fertiliser would significantly help the farmers achieve their ambitions of contributing to the development of agriculture and ensuring food security in the state.
He encouraged the people to support the Akeredolu-led administration, noting the significant development the Sunshine State had witnessed in the last seven years, particularly in the area of food production.
“I want to express my sincere apologies for my absence, as we have been diligently engaged in our oversight functions.”
“During my campaign tour, I made a commitment to support our hardworking farmers. I pledged to stand by them, and I am proud to announce that I have fulfilled that promise.”
He urged the farmers and the people of the state to be patient with both the state and federal governments, emphasizing that the steps being taken were to improve the lives of all Nigerians and revitalize the national economy.
Representative of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Mrs. Sadeko Modupe, urged the beneficiaries not to sell the fertilizer at ridiculous prices.
She emphasised that fertilisers were meant to provide plants with essential nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, enhancing the quantity and quality of crops, and making produce more marketable and valuable.
On his part, the Zonal Chairman of the Association, Ajayi Emmanuel, lamented the lack of government support for farmers.
He stated that this gesture would significantly boost farm produce.
Ajayi also called on other politicians to emulate this good gesture and thanked Ipinsagba for empowering low-income farmers in the six Local Governments in the area.
A beneficiary, who is also a community leader, Oluduro Johnson, said, “Ipinsagba has proven to be accountable and responsible to his constituents.
We have been yearning for this for a very long time, but we lacked the wherewithal to purchase it.”
