Taraba State governor, Darius Ishaku, has declared that the state government would be relocating residents on the riverbanks areas across the state to avoid future flood disaster.
Ishaku made this declaration, on Sunday, while inspecting the Saturday flooded areas in Jalingo, he disclosed that the incident affected all the riverbanks areas in the state.
Tribune Online reports that over 100 residence were affected by the incident in Jalingo the state capital while state emergency Management agency confirmed zero casualty across the affected local government in the state.
According to the governor, the state government would intervene in the situation in two phases, the distribution of relief materials and food items to alleviate the victims suffering while the relocation of residence would be the last part.
“This incident is unfortunate, we would not want a repeat of this that may even claim lives. We would relocate all those on the riverbanks across the state to avoid a repeat of this unfortunate situation.
“The state government is going to immediately mobilise and send relief materials to the affected local governments to ease the plight of the victims,” Ishaku sympathized.
While calling on the donor agencies to assist the state government in providing relief materials for victims, governor Ishaku lamented the federal government and the federal ministry of humanitarian affairs approach toward emergency issues in Taraba, noted that “relief materials don’t get to Taraba from the federal government.
“The federal government don’t send us relief materials whenever we are in a situation like this and make request for assistance.
“I learnt the minister of humanitarian affairs was here a few weeks ago sharing N20,000 to crisis victims, I feel anything that is coming to Taraba from the federal government should pass through the state government.
“The federal government should consider our flood victims this time, we need assistance from the federal government to help us balance the leaving condition of these flood victims,” Ishaku appealed.
