A 37-year-old sales assistant, Adekunle Ojo, was on Wednesday charged with theft of N556,100 at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Ojo, a resident of Okota in Isolo area of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
But the Prosecutor, Police Sgt. Ishola Samuel told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 9 at NNPC Filling Station, Plot 1, Ogunusi Ave., Ojodu, Lagos.
Samuel said the accused allegedly stole the sum of N556,100 belonging to the station.
“He collected N556,100, being proceeds from the sales of lubricating oil, but failed to remit the money; he claimed to have invested the money in a business.
“The case was reported to the police and the accused was immediately arrested,’’ Samuel said.
The offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section seven years imprisonment for clerks or assistants who steal from their employers.
The Magistrate, Mrs A.I. Abina, in her ruling, granted the accused N500, 000 bails with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until May 28.
