FG urged to include technology, others in curriculum of colleges of education

Published by

The Federal Government has been advised to formulate new education policy that will include technology, science and business studies programmes in the curriculum of colleges of education in Nigeria.

Chairman, governing council of Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu, Ogun State, Prince Yemi Adefulu, made the call at a reception organized for the resource assessment panel of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) which was at TASCE for the resource assessment of the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) programme.

According to a statement by the public relations officer of the college, Mrs Olufisayo Olajide, the governing council chairman noted that the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) which was introduced over 50 years ago to address anomalies observed in the then colonial education has become outdated.

He noted that there is a need for the Federal Government to review the NCE system to make it more relevant to the needs of the society by evaluating and expanding the direction and curriculum of colleges of education and broaden their offerings to serve the contemporary needs of the nation.

Adefulu said that the current apathy towards colleges of education by parents and their wards should birth a concern which will culminate in the repositioning of the colleges by education authorities and regulating agencies to forestall the fate that has befallen the Grade II education system.

Teachers, he said, should be placed on special salaries which will establish the importance of their engagement to the country. He also urged the government to engage the colleges of education in continuous training and retraining of teachers in primary and secondary schools in order to bring them up to date, retool them and make them technically savvy.

Earlier, the leader of the TRCN resource assessment panel, Professor Esther Odu-Oluwa, commended the college for brazing the trail in the application of virtual learning technique.

She noted that with virtual or remote learning technique, prospective students for PDE programme can participate in the programme from the comfort of their homes.

Mrs Odu-Oluwa charged the college to target establishments that have training schools like banks, school of nursing and communication outfits.

In his welcome address, the provost of the college, Dr Lukmon Adeola Kiadese, thanked the Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for approving and recognizing the certificate of PDE programme.

According to him, the PDE is equivalent to the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
