FG seeks passage of national disability bill

The Federal Government has sought for passage into law, the National Disability Bill to ensure and strengthen the full implementation of the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Jummai Alhassan made call in Abuja at the celebration of the 2016 international day of persons with disabilities.

She said lack of global focus on disabilities and its attendant consequences have remained one of the major banes that have continued to threatened human existence and development.

She said, “This has led to the world attention being drawn towards addressing issues affecting persons with disabilities especially through the United Nations declarations, treaties, instruments, conventions and optional protocols.

“The signing and ratification of one of such conventions and its optional protocols and the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities by Nigeria in 2010 goes a long way to confirm the country’s commitment towards the development, care and welfare of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.”

She stated that the international day of persons with disabilities was aimed at awakening the consciousness of all member-states towards encouraging and promoting activities that will ensure integration into the mainstream of the society and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
