The Federal Government, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), and other stakeholders have emphasised the need for greater investment in leadership education and personality development, describing it as a strategic tool for combating economic challenges.
This position was presented at the 2023 Corporate Charisma Conference organised by the Institute of Personality Development and Customer Relationship in Ibadan.
The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on International Cooperation, Dapo Oyewole, highlighted in his presentation that leadership education and personality development are essential for addressing the nation’s challenges.
According to Oyewole, effective leadership and personal growth are critical in driving positive change and fostering sustainable growth in Nigeria. He stressed that investing in these areas would help nurture a new generation of leaders equipped with the skills, knowledge, and character required to address the country’s multifaceted issues.
“This initiative is a vital step toward creating a brighter future for Nigeria and its citizens, aligning with the goals of President Bola Tinubu’s administration,” Oyewole stated.
He further underscored that the role of leadership education and personality development in driving meaningful societal change cannot be overstated. He noted that the government has introduced various initiatives to address the country’s pressing challenges.
“All across Africa, particularly Nigeria, people are seeking competent leaders,” Oyewole remarked. “It is important to examine the qualities and values of effective leadership. Leadership is not just about titles or individuals but about a holistic view of society—how one’s actions, positions, and comportment can influence and inspire progress.”
“Leadership does not begin the moment one is elected; it is a process that starts long before,” Dapo Oyewole remarked. “Leadership requires a spirit of empathy, the ability to listen to the people, genuine care for those being led, and a willingness to shoulder responsibilities.”
In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr. Ike Neliaku, highlighted the essential values and attributes that define effective leadership, lamenting the lack of these basic principles in political leadership today.
He urged the political class to embrace foundational leadership values, emphasising that doing so would benefit Nigeria and humanity at large.
“Technology has changed the dynamics of leadership and how leaders impact their followers,” Neliaku said. “Training yourself is essential. You must learn new things, discard habits that no longer fit the evolving culture, and commit to continuous relearning, especially to thrive in the current economic climate.”
The President of the Institute of Personality Development and Customer Relationship Management (IPDCRM), Dr. Ayobami Owolabi, also spoke on the theme “Investment in Leadership Education and Personality Development: A Valuable Asset, Timely Rescue Anchor in a Depressed Economy.”
Dr Owolabi noted that the event seeks to provide solutions to Nigeria’s and global economic challenges. He expressed optimism that the initiative would pave the way for peace and economic recovery, helping Nigeria navigate its current economic difficulties.
