Fashion tricks for going braless

Let’s face it. For many women, they would rather do without bras, but for many occasions, the brassiere helps to hold up the breasts and keep them from bouncing around too much.

However, in the name of fashion, there will come one or more times when wearing a bra may not be necessary. In fact, for many wedding, or red carpet event dresses, it is advisable not to wear a bra because of the material makeup of such dresses. Sometimes for the work environment, a bra may not be very necessary especially for ladies who spend many hours outdoors.

Bras have been linked in many studies to causing breast cancer, breast pain, spread of infections from trapped heat, circulatory issues, among other health risks. Bras can also be very uncomfortable, even for long-term wearers.

Besides, it has not been confirmed if bras prevent breasts from sagging according to popular belief. While some may go for the strapless bras option, they are known to slide down if one moves around too much, thereby leaving room for exposing the nipples if care is not taken.

Makeover shares a few tips for going braless in outfits.

Nipple concealer

Nipple concealers or covers come in various products such as silicone or adhesive. While some can be used more than once, others are exposed to be disposed after single use. For the silicone alternative, they are reusable and as such, always prioritise quality over cost. When purchasing nipple covers/concealers, look out for comfort, quality and always make sure they stick on just right.

Adhesive bra

Also called sticky bras, they usually come backless and are the alternative for strapless bras. The trick to perfecting the braless look in adhesive bras is buying the right size for your boobs, especially for big-breasted women. Although sticky bras can constitute a headache for first-time users, in the long run, especially as you will not have to bother about visible bra straps and divisive lines in your figure-hugging outfit, they are worth the trouble. It is important to note that you will need to be absolutely sure of your size and fit and may even have to discard a few before you land the right size.

Body suit

With the bodysuit, you have the two-in-one alternative and they are in fact, the more convenient option for going braless. They will not only help to control how your figure appears in the outfit, they do not need a bra and usually fit the body shape appropriately, as long as you’re wearing the right size.

The built-in option

For tailor-made outfits, you can speak with the designer to add built in pads for the breasts so you wouldn’t be bothered about using a bra. There are also formal event dresses that come with pads for the breasts. They are identified by the feel and look on the chest area.

Layer up

For office environments where you have the alternative of wearing layers of clothing, such as a shirt and jacket, feel free to go braless, as long as you’ll keep your layers on. When going braless in layers, always be sure of the texture of the last layer of clothing before your naked breasts, especially if you may have to take off the jacket.

Plain old cellotape

It is not uncommon for women to simply use transparent adhesive tape over the nipples, when nipple covers or concealers are not readily available.

Dos and don’ts for going braless

DON’TS:

  • Don’t wear silk or the really light-weight fabrics. Though it feels soft against the skin, it will easily show nipples or the bumps caused by pasties.
  • Don’t rely on cotton, either. It tends to wick moisture, but the fibre holds the dampness and doesn’t evaporate it like a technical material; instead, look for clothing made out of microfibers or bamboo.
  • Don’t wear clothes with boat-neck or flowy, loose-fitting tops. You are more likely to have a wardrobe malfunction when bending or reaching down.
  • Don’t go braless in a tube top or strapless dress if you are busty (full C or D cup and above). Your breasts will get compressed and have a sinking look to them.
  • Don’t go braless in inappropriate scenarios, especially in a professional or work setting. Always use the rules of common sense.

DOS:

  • Do wear halter tops and dresses that you can tie yourself, especially if you are bigger breasted. This way, you can decide on the level of support you’re getting.
  • Do go for clothes with under-bust support like empire dresses; they are the most friendly for going braless.
  • Do wear sunscreen because the skin on the décolletage is angled up to the sun and the skin there is very thin and more sensitive.
  • Do take good care of adhesives; wash them with lingerie soap. When washing and drying bras, always hook clasps together. It helps prevent the hooks from getting caught on other items in the machine and also helps keep it from stretching so it maintains it original shape.
  • Do know that all women’s breasts are different. Breasts aren’t just flat or round, and nipples aren’t just innies or outies. Going braless will be a different experience for everyone, and all women should be accepting of that.
