The Johnny singer during an interview with Hotfm during the week, had tried to debunk the existence of a number one artiste in Nigeria, stating that such position was at best imaginary “…because the top five artistes in Nigeria that are the biggest in Africa can shut down the exact same capacity.
“The same capacity Wizkid holds down in Africa I hold it down. The same capacity Davido holds down in Africa I hold it down. Same venues, we all shut it down. So, there is no number one artiste. That is the truth,” she said.
Looking at her profile, Yemi Alade gained prominence as an Afropop singer and songwriter after winning the Peak Talent show in 2009 and she attained national acceptance in 2012 after singing onto the music label, Effyzzie Music Group, which saw her release her hottest single, Johnny in 2013, produced by Selebobo. The song became an international hit in Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Liberia, Uganda, Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom.
And indeed, she has shared the same stage with MI, Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Shina Peters, May D, Waje among others. But in terms of international recognition, Yemi Alade can only boast of two. Although, she was nominated once at the 2015 BET Awards, her office wall is only lined with two MTV African Music Awards for Best Female in 2015 and 2016.
Meanwhile, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid and Davido have large and intimidating shelves flamboyantly decorated with every possible international awards except the Grammies and two others, not to mention international collaborations and number of albums and hit tracks released.
Speaking further, Yemi Alade said, “But not everybody will agree to it. People will be like “ahh Yemi shut up. wetin you dey talk? You are not number one sha. But that is not my business. Why not go and ask the promoters, the people who know the numbers, if you must?”
One of the fans that reacted to her claim said, “My sister, I respect you a lot, but don’t go around saying things like this oh. We love you in your lane that you are. Don’t drag lane with Wizkid and Davido, at least not yet/now”.
