My mind was filled with sorrow when I received the sad news of the inferno that razed Akesan market in Oyo town on January 6, 2020, killing one young boy, Wareez Akano.
Our security agencies are expected to be more civil while trying to discharge their duties to protect the lives and properties of citizens during protest.
We expect our security agencies to use tear gas to dislodge the citizens who want to either loot the shops or attack firemen during the inferno instead of shooting directly at them.
Now, Oyo State has lost one of its citizens. The question is who shot the young boy of 14? I am of the opinion that the Oyo State Commissioner of Police will fish out the killer.
However, for every problem, there is a solution. Fire outbreak is very rampant during the dry season; it happens everywhere in Nigeria. It is the duty of government to protect our lives. A lasting solution to prevent future occurrence of fire incident in all our major markets in Ibadan and other towns including Oyo town, is to construct fire service office in our markets.
It is prudent to plead with the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde; the speaker of the House of Assembly, Debo Ogundoyin, and relevant stakeholders to constitute a committee that will be saddled with responsibility of unraveling the cause of the fire incident and also summon the head of security agencies so as to come and explain the role played that led to the death of the teenager.
