The member representing the Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South federal constituency of Enugu State, Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta, has praised President Bola Tinubu for signing the South East Development Commission Bill into law, stating that this action demonstrates the President’s commitment to healing the wounds of the civil war in the region.
In a statement signed and issued on his behalf by his legislative aide, Mr. Okwy Ossai, and made available to newsmen on Thursday, the federal lawmaker expressed optimism that with the bill now signed into law, practical implementation of the 3Rs declared by then-military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, shortly after the war would commence in the South East.
Hon. Obetta, who is the deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Budget and Research, also praised the leadership of both arms of the National Assembly, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, PhD, as well as South East stakeholders and all sympathizers in the region, for making the establishment of the bill a reality.
He described the bill as “a landmark move that promises to revolutionize the socio-economic landscape of the South East region.”

He further stated, “The South East Development Commission is a testament to President Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive governance and regional development. This is a dream come true for our people,” Hon. Obetta said.
He highlighted the expected benefits the Commission would bring to the region, noting that it would serve as a catalyst for growth, bridge the infrastructural gap, and foster economic prosperity in the region.
Hon. Obetta added that the South East Development Commission would tackle the region’s developmental challenges head-on, addressing critical areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and human capital development.
The Commission, he said, would lead to accelerated infrastructure development, including roads, bridges, and airports; enhanced economic opportunities through investment promotion and job creation; improved access to quality education and healthcare services; and the empowerment of youths and women through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programs. Additionally, it would focus on environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives.
“This is a momentous occasion for our region, and we are grateful for the President’s unwavering support. We pledge to work tirelessly to ensure the successful implementation of the Commission’s mandate.”
Hon. Obetta, however, called for genuine collaborative efforts from all South East stakeholders to ensure the realization of what he described as “boundless gains” awaiting the region through collaborative governance.
