Following the recent remand and subsequent arraignment of several young individuals by the police, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed a full investigation into the care and welfare of detainees while in detention facilities.
This was stated in a release made available to newsmen by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The IGP issued the directive upon receiving the investigative report on the incident on Monday while he was in Algiers, Algeria, for the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation committee meeting.
The statement noted, “The IGP vowed to thoroughly examine the report and take necessary actions to address any procedural lapses or concerns.”
To further ensure professionalism in investigations, with an emphasis on child-friendly procedures, the IGP has summoned all Divisional Commissioners of Criminal Investigation Department (DCs CID) and Heads of Investigation Units to a conference and workshop on November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Centre in Jabi.
Additionally, the statement emphasised that “the Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to upholding legal frameworks, ensuring fairness, and accountability, especially for vulnerable groups.”
