A Labour Party (LP) governorship aspirant in Edo State, Mr Morrison Eghobamien, put his weight behind the ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Tuesday, saying it was necessary following the ugly situation that informed the strike action.
This was just as the LP governorship hopeful counselled the labour unions not to close the door against dialogue should the government initiate the move.
Eghobamien, who spoke to newsmen in Benin City, said the nationwide strike became inevitable following the breakdown of dialogue as well as other related issues and called on the government to engage the striking unions in dialogue for an early resolution of the issues that informed the industrial action in the interest of Nigerians.
He said the government must rise above sentiments and negotiate with the NLC, noting that strike action nationwide “is the last resort when dialogue fails”, adding that industrial action should not be prolonged.
“This strike should not go on endlessly until the issues are resolved. I just think it is the wrong way of doing things. I think we can’t just go on strike. The government has got to dialogue with the NLC.
“In developed countries, after dialogue has failed, before you embark on strike, that is the right way of doing things. I am in support of the strike action, even though I don’t like strike action.
“Dialogue needs to continue even though the strike is on so that we can shorten the length of the strike, Eghobamien said.
