Drug peddling allegation against SAHCO mischievous — Owolabi

AS controversy continues to trail the allegation of involvement of Skyway Aviation Handing Company (SAHCO) in drug peddling, a former managing director of the handling company, Dr Oluropo Owolabi has condemned the insinuation.

Owolabi emphasized the zero tolerance of the company towards such negativity.

The former SAHCO Chief, who cited how the company has never tolerated such criminality, declared that the company has made it mandatory not to shield a questionable staff bit ready to hand over any worker caught to the appropriate authorities for either prosecution or dismissal.

While describing the news as malicious former managing director declared: “If any staff gets entangled and involved directly or indirectly, we have zero tolerance for such things; it is immediate dismissal and such person is handed over to the appropriate authorities.”

Owolabi, who said he was shocked and embarrassed by the report, explained that SAHCO was not in charge of knowing the content of passengers baggage until it has been declared by the Customs service, stressing that SAHCO was not a clearing organisation.

According to him, clearing of goods passed through different agencies at the airport before getting to SAHCO hence, he maintained how the company has come a long way and strive by becoming the best warehouse in the country with ease of customers getting their goods without stress.

The handling company had earlier debunked the allegation that the company runs a drug cartel.

The company, in a statement issued by the spokesperson, Mrs Vanessa Uansohia Adetola de-clared: “Let me say without mincing words that the report is FALSE and it is only a figment of the imagination of the reporter.

Although, we serve as a gateway to Imports and exports in Nigeria and we are proud to provide such world class facility in Nigeria, how-ever, our role does not include verification, checking the content of cargo as alleged in this report.

It is therefore fiendish and cruel to insinuate we run a drug cartel.

“Also, we want to make it clear to the public that all Government agencies, the NDLEA, DSS, Quarantine, Airforce etc have unfettered access to our warehouse where they carry out their duties without our interference. It is therefore important to note that this is not the first-time suspects will be arrested within our facilities and we always cooperate with the agencies while they carry out their investigation without shielding anyone involved be it our staff, contractor or business partner.

“As a responsible company, we make available the latest technology to assist Government agencies to fight any form of crime within our facilities and we will not relent in doing that. We hereby advise the public to ignore the FAKE news that is being peddled.”
