Armed with placards bearing varying inscriptions portraying their grievances, local government workers in Delta State under the auspices of 5National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Wednesday took to the streets in Warri again to protest over their unpaid salary arrears.
Metro reports that members of the union had, on Wednesday May 17, stormed the streets of Warri, protesting over their unpaid 13 months salaries.
They had accused the Delta State governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa of betrayal, saying his administration had reneged on the gentleman agreement the union entered with him about three months ago.
The Wednesday protest brought a halt to activities at the Warri South Local Government Area secretariat along the ever busy Warri-Sapele road.
The protesters, in their hundreds, sacked workers including the chairman of the council, Mr. Mofe Edema who left the premises before the NULGE executive arrived.
Commercial activities and vehicular movement were also disrupted at the axis of the Warri-Sapele road where the secretariat is situated.
Speaking on the protest, treasurer of NULGE, Delta chapter, Comrade Ogberetine Obatare and the NULGE chairman, Ndokwa West LGA, Comrade Christopher Egba, who led the protesters to shut down the secretariat spoke on the exercise.
They condemned the insensitivity of the state government to the plight of local government workers in the state over their unpaid 14 months salaries.
Many of their members, the union leaders disclosed, had died of hunger and starvation, describing the Senator Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration as callous and cruel.
Speaking in the same vein, the Chief Information Officer of Warri South Mrs Ufuoma Ajuyah appealed to the state government to pay them as they are dying of hunger.
Mrs Orove Annette, a worker at the local government also described the plight of members of the union as harrowing and alarming.
Meanwhile, the executive members of NULGE had vowed to replicate similar massive protests in the remaining 23 local government areas having already done that in Uvwie and Warri South LGAs.
