An International Organisation for Peacebuilding and Social Justice (PSJ) United Kingdom has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in action, not name, in the areas of security, economy, hunger, and poverty.
The convener, Ayo Adedoyin, who spoke to the Tribune Online on Saturday, said an emergency was declared in name, not action, and consequently had no positive result.
Adedoyin cited the instance of farmers in the middle belt in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps instead of farming the foods that would keep down the prices of goods in the country.
He noted that the country is blessed with people, intellect, talent, numbers, natural resources, and human resources that can change its status for good.
The Convener, therefore, urged the President to put the round pegs in the round holes so that the country would be better for it and everything would be in good shape.
On the issue of security, which is as important as the issue of economy, as well as hunger and poverty. They all need to be dealt with simultaneously.
“President Bola Tinubu needs to declare a state of emergency in the areas of security, economy, poverty, and hunger.
“Most importantly, it is not about only declaring a state of emergency in name but action in order for the country to be better for it.
“When the President came in, he declared a state of emergency in the area of hunger and food. But, as it translated to anything?
“So, it must not be a state of emergency in name but action.
“Take a look at the middle belt, the food basket of the nation, where farmers that should be farming the foods to keep the prices low are sitting in IDP camps. That is a tragedy.
“Nigeria is blessed. We are blessed with people, intellect, talent, numbers, natural resources, and human resources.
“If the President genuinely would like to live a legacy that will favour him, get the right people around the right tables and address it in reality, not just in name.” He said.
Meanwhile, the founder recalled that a team of well-meaning Nigerians in the United Kingdom who do not want to keep complaining about the ills in society collaborated to contribute their quota to the development of the country; hence, the rationale for the existence of the NGO.
