CSO hails Gov Abiodun over APC LG chairmanship candidates’ emergence

Governor Dapo Abiodun

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Community Advocacy for Peace and Strategic Leadership Initiative (CAPSL-Initiative), has commended the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for the rancour-free affirmation process that led to the emergence of All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidates for the November 16 Local Council election.

In a statement jointly signed on Monday by Akwuobi Francis and Pius Pamela, Chairman and Secretary, respectively, the Leadership Initiative noted that the usual tensions that characterise exercises of this nature were absent due to the seamless manner in which choices were made.

According to the group, the development underscored Governor Abiodun’s capacity and capability to foster consensus, which is expected to mitigate potential pre- and post-election crises across the 20 LGAs.

While clarifying that it has no political leaning, CAPSL-Initiative stated that its interest lies in the security of lives and property of Ogun residents before, during, and after the election.

The group said, “We boldly state that the governor’s initiative will de-escalate whatever tensions might have accompanied the exercise.”

“This will have a far-reaching effect, as security and law enforcement agencies will sustain ongoing efforts at addressing security challenges,” the group added.

The CSO urged the public to support relevant authorities by reporting suspicious movements and activities, emphasising that security is now a whole-of-society approach.

It further encouraged other critical stakeholders in society, including non-governmental organisations and corporate entities, to show commitment to peace, security, and order in the Gateway State.

“We call on sister civil society organisations, corporate bodies, and others to work for the progress of Ogun State in particular and Nigeria in general.

“We passionately appeal to parents and guardians to preach the values of morals and good conduct to their children, while also urging youth groups to sensitise members on the dangers of running afoul of the law.

“In conclusion, we wish to reiterate our earlier call to political parties, supporters, and other stakeholders to play by the rules before, during, and after the forthcoming council election.

“Nigerians must, at all times, understand that there is no substitute for peace and order.”
