In a bid to alleviate the plight of residents of Belegete community in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State, the state government has taken steps to fulfill its promise by distributing food and relief materials to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP).
It will be recalled that in January 2024, governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, sent the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Helen Isamoh, to the community to assess Belegete’s condition following the invasion and atrocities against its people by Cameroonian Ambazonians.
Cameroonian Ambazonians invaded Belegete on a December morning, ransacked the community and kidnapped more than 30 people, including the slain chief.
During her first visit to the Belegete community, the humanitarian commissioner promised the people that the state governor would do his best to alleviate their plight and find ways to facilitate their return to their ancestral home.
To commemorate Easter, the commissioner arrived with a truck full of relief materials for the people at the Cattle Ranch in Obudu, a temporary site where some Belegetes’ are camping.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the commissioner is making her second trip in two months to meet the people.
Welcoming the commissioner and her team, representatives of the IDP camp thanked the state government for the kindness and generosity and the commissioner for fulfilling her promise to return to their community with relief materials.
He said that her return was a clear indication of the care and thoughtfulness of the state governor and that the Belegete will always be grateful for the attention they were receiving from the government.
He added that the lack of roads connecting Belegete with other communities makes it difficult for them to receive help from state security agencies when needed. He called on the government to prioritise road construction in Belegete communities as soon as possible.
In her response, the commissioner thanked the people of Belegete for their patience and faith in the government’s effectiveness.
She said the state governor, Prince Otu and his wife had been worried about the plight of Belegete since they received the first reports of the Ambazonian invasion.
She disclosed that the governor had been working with the Federal Government officials to get them relief materials and to ensure that they all returned to their villages and live safely.
The commissioner assured them that the governor continues to work with state and federal authorities to ensure that their communities will never again experience the terrible events that happened to them.
