Court to rule on El-zakzaky bail Oct 4

CourtKADUNA court has adjourned to October 4, 2018, to rule whether or not it would grant bail to the leader of the Shiite, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat.

Elzakzaky had been arraigned before the court for culpable homicide.

However, when the court resumed sitting on Thursday, his counsel, Maxwell Kyon, moved for his bail.

Kyon said that they came prepared with their brief, while the government lawyers also came with theirs and subsequently, the matter was adjourned to October 4.

He said that they were optimistic that Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat would be granted freedom, saying,“We have moved an application for bail for the first and second accused and we are optimistic of getting bail for our clients.”

When fielding questions, Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary Kaduna State Ministry of Justice, Chris Umar said they have been able to serve the fourth and third accused persons through publications on newspapers.

“Afterwards, if they fail to appear, we have sought the court to issue a bench warrant.

Meanwhile, the 100 Shiites that were discharged by a Kaduna court have demanded for compensation and apology from the Kaduna state government.

In a press conference addressed by their Counsel, Barrister Maxwell Kyon said these people have spent 2 years and 7 months in prison custody awaiting trial.

‘We still believe that the government should apologize to them and pay them commensurate compensation.

According to him, among those discharged were 4 students of Ahmadu Bello University and several other students who lost their status as students.

“Among them were breadwinners who were not able to meet their responsibilities, saying, “the wife of one them even left the matrimonial abandoning her kids who are 9 years and 3 years respectively.

“A large number of those that stood trial were workers in various ministries, agencies and departments of government in states of the federation. Most of them could not do their BVN due to their incarceration. Many of them had their appointments terminated and their pensionable appointments and benefits lost.
