A Grade I Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dissolved a two-year-old marriage between Habiba Aliyu and her husband, Al-Amin Shaibu by way of “Khuli”.

Khuli is a procedure through which a woman can divorce herself from her husband in Islam, by returning the dowry and everything she received from him during their life together, or without returning anything, as agreed by the spouse or judge.

The judge, Musa Sabo, dissolved their marriage according to Islamic Law, following Habiba’s prayer for divorce by way of khuli on grounds of lack of care.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Sabo ordered the petitioner to refund the dowry of N50,000 back to the respondent.

Earlier, the petitioner told the court that she got married to Al-Amin under Islamic Law on February10, 2023, and their union is blessed with a 6-month-old daughter.

She however told the court that she had lost interest in the marriage and would not obey Al-Amin’s orders.

“I have lost interest in our marriage because my husband has consistently neglected me.

“I am ready to refund to my husband the N50,000 bride price he paid on me,” she said.

She however, prayed the court to dissolve their marriage by way of Khuli.

The respondent however failed to make an appearance in court despite being served court processes.
