As various political groups in the country intensify alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ASELGON) has distanced itself from such efforts and warned against the unauthorized use of its name.
This warning was issued in a press statement personally signed by the National President of the association, Honourable Albert Asipa, and made available to Tribune Online in Abuja.
Asipa, a former executive chairman of Imeko/Afon Local Government Area in Ogun State, reiterated that ASELGON is a conglomerate of political parties, consisting of members from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), among others.
He emphasized that, given this composition, it would be inappropriate for any individual or party to claim ownership of the association.
“So, I urge my members, especially the state chairmen, to remain vigilant, as reports indicate that some individuals are falsely parading themselves as ASELGON members and seeking to be part of the ongoing political alignments.
“I have received numerous phone calls regarding ASELGON’s alleged involvement in political developments, and I find it necessary to categorically clarify that our association is not, and cannot be, part of such activities. At the same time, I call on the unscrupulous elements attempting to drag our noble association into these matters to desist immediately.”
Reiterating the need for members to protect the integrity of the association, Asipa stressed that the efforts invested in building ASELGON over the past decade must not be undermined by desperate politicians.

“It is a reality that our association cannot be overlooked in the political affairs of this country, given the privilege we have had to serve our people. However, we must not fall for the antics of selfish politicians or lose our focus.
“ASELGON is not for sale. Our purpose in coming together is to advance grassroots development, share our vast experience with the younger generation to create a better society, and advocate for local government autonomy, which we see as a catalyst for even development in the country,” Asipa added.
Promising that the association’s forthcoming national convention in Jos, the Plateau State capital, would provide a unique opportunity to further its cause, the ASELGON president stated:
“Having contributed significantly to the emancipation of the grassroots, we will not sit back and allow our past efforts to be eroded. No, we will continue working, engaging all relevant stakeholders, and that is precisely what the upcoming Jos convention is about.”
