Dr Latif Busari, Executive Secretary of the council, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the increase in the production would be achieved through the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan that was adopted.
NAN reports that the production of sugar in the country as at the end of 2015 was 15,000 tonnes per annum.
Busari said the plan was to implement the roadmap for the attainment of self-sufficiency in sugar production for the country.
“The key strategy is to motivate private investment in the Backward Integration Programme (BIP).
“It will see the existing refineries gradually substitute the imported raw sugar with locally produced sugar over a 10-year period that is 2013 to 2023.
“The plan has estimated that our demand for sugar will breach the 1.7 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) mark by 2020.
“To be able to satisfy this from domestic production, we will need to establish some 28 sugar factories of varying capacities,’’ he said.
