Cleric enjoins Nigerians to have faith in God at Odigies funeral thanksgiving

Christians in Benin City, Edo State have been enjoined to continually have faith in God in their daily lives as it would be difficult to please God without faith.

Venerable Dr. Shola Ogbebor of the All Saints’ Chapel, University of Benin, Ekehuan Campus in Benin City, gave the admonition during the Outing/Thanksgiving Service of late. Sir. (Barrister) Stephen Ogbebor Odigie and his wife, Lady Beatrice Onyejionweaka Odigie on Sunday in Benin City.

Odigie, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State, passed on on February 23, 20123 at the age of 84, while his wife, Beatrice, died on March 10, 2023.

The late former Edo State Attorney General, an Awoist, was before he ventured into the legal profession a senior prison official at the Calabar Prison in the 60s, when the Nigeria’s foremost nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was incarcerated in the facility by the Tafawa Balewa administration on trump-up charge of treasonable felony.

Odigie, together with Pa Gabriel Ohiow, catered to Chief Awolowo and the duo maintained a father-sons relationship with the avatar after he was released from the prison custody by the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

The officiating Priest, who drew his sermon titled “What shall be our reward” from Matthew 19:27-30, described reward as benefit received for an action or work done, noting that it would be difficult to please God without faith.

Venerable Ogbebor, disclosed that God is always faithful and rewards those who diligently seek Him, just as he advised christians across the country to live a life full of good legacies

He noted that Sir and Lady Stephen Ogbebor Odigie, left behind good legacies for their children, this he advised the children to cultivate.

“No matter how long you you live on earth, death will definitely come. Death is not the issue, but where would you live your eternity? What would you be remembered for after death”? He asked.

He added that it was imperative for christians to cultivate the act of giving and working for God, stressing that such “virtues is expected to open doors for christians.

The funeral rites for the late couple began on Thursday, March 23 with service of songs, followed by a Valedictory Court Session and funeral service on Friday, March 24. Guests and dignitaries were fetted at a social outing organised on Saturday,March 25 and the Sunday, March 26 Thanksgiving/Outing service was the grand finale of the funeral rites.
