THE colours green, red and white are synonymous with Christmas and its traditions and each of these colours symbolise one thing or the other.
The colour green signifies everlasting life. While every other tree dies during the winter, only holly bushes and fir trees remain evergreen. People thought it was some kind of magic that helped these trees survive the harsh weather, thus, these plants were both feared and worshipped at the same time. Ever since, the colour green came to be associated with life. The colour green represents the birth of the Son of God.
The colour white represents purity; Jesus Christ, who is spotless, sinless and pure. The colour also happens to be that of snow which is experienced abroad during winter and Christmas. This colour is incorporated by most churches too during Christmas.
Colour red is also used at Christmas to represent the blood of Jesus when He died on the cross. It is part of winter festivities because of fruits such as apples and holly berries, which were readily available during the winter months. Red is also popular during Christmas because of Santa’s suit.
