There is a silent trap many women fall into without realising it.
We work hard, earn money, and then spend most of it maintaining appearances instead of building security.
Some of us can account for every handbag we bought in the last two years, but cannot explain where our savings went. We know the prices of the latest phones, wigs, shoes, and aso-ebi, but we have never taken time to understand shares, land documentation, treasury bills, or business ownership.
The truth is simple: if most of what you buy loses value immediately after purchase, you are feeding liabilities instead of building assets.
And no, this is not a sermon against enjoyment. Women deserve softness, beauty, comfort, and good things. But there must be balance. A beautiful life should not become an expensive prison.
One of the most powerful financial decisions a woman can make is to deliberately choose assets over liabilities.
An asset puts money into your future.
A liability keeps taking money from you.
An asset may be land, stocks, a profitable side business, intellectual property, rental property, cooperative investments, or even a professional certification that increases your earning power.

A liability may be endless impulse buying, a car you cannot maintain comfortably, debt used for vanity, or lifestyle expenses designed mainly to impress people who are not paying your bills.
The danger with liabilities is that they often look glamorous in the beginning. Assets usually look boring at first. But after a few years, the woman who quietly bought shares, saved consistently, or invested in property begins to breathe differently. She negotiates life from a position of confidence, not desperation.
I have seen women spend millions on parties and still struggle to pay school fees months later. I have also seen women who started with very little gradually build wealth simply because they learned one discipline: buy things that can grow, not just things that can shine.
Sometimes the pressure is cultural. Society celebrates visible wealth more than invisible stability. People applaud the new car but may never notice the investment account. They admire the designer outfit but cannot see the emergency fund quietly protecting a family from crisis.
But wisdom is learning that not everything valuable needs applause.
As women, especially in Nigeria’s current economic climate, financial intelligence is no longer optional. Inflation is teaching hard lessons. The cost of living keeps rising. Depending on one source of income is becoming dangerous. This is why every woman must begin asking herself deeper questions before spending money:
Will this purchase still matter in one year?
Is this helping my future or only satisfying this moment?
Am I buying this because I truly need it or because I want validation?
These questions can change a woman’s financial story.
A woman who consistently chooses assets may not look wealthy immediately, but she is planting seeds for freedom. One day, those seeds become options. And options are powerful. Options mean you can leave unhealthy situations, survive difficult seasons, support your children properly, retire with dignity, and help others without sinking yourself.
Real wealth is not noise.
It is stability.
It is peace.
It is having choices.
So before your next major purchase, pause for a moment and ask yourself:
“Is this building me or merely decorating me?”
Your answer may shape your future more than you realise.
