Borno EFCC sensitisises residents on corruption

EFCCTHE Director of Operation of the EFCC in Borno State John Sandere recently led his team of operatives and detectives in a special anti-corruption walk around the area of its premises.

It was the first in the series of sensitization since the tension of insurgency griped the Borno State capital about nine years ago.

Sandere said that his boss Ibrahim Magu was not only worried about the spates of high level corruption but was really concerned about the young generation who should be prevented from delving into the massive corruption that almost crippled the economy of this country.

He told the Nigerian tribune that as long as there is the will power to resist, corruption can be reduced to the barest minimum in the country especially if the younger generation is sensitized in understanding that there is dignity in labour.

Reflecting on his tenure in Maiduguri since he assumed duty during an exclusive interview, Sandere said that about four cases are in their terminal stages while one conviction has been achieved this year.

The State Director of Operation said that investigation in certain cases have not been easy because of the obvious security risks of meeting insurgents in the line of duty which is why some have been suspended till tension goes down.

The state director revealed that the agency is just picking up in Borno and Yobe because of the lingering insurgency but do hope that many convictions may have been achieved before the end of 2017.

He said that the office was temporarily moved to Gombe but is back in full to the Maiduguri zone which also covers Yobe State and will expect people to utilize the opportunities offered by the EFCC to rid the two states of impunity and high-class corruption.

Highlights of the walk include banners carrying inscriptions like say no to corruption, corruption rubs us all, cheating in examination is corruption, EFCC will get you anywhere any day.

Nigeria has been bedeviled with high class corruption which is most common in the public sector where individuals steal billions and have gone to desperate levels to keep such amounts in unthinkable levels like cemetery where some corrupted people have also been laid to rest.

This goes on sadly because absurdly, mere material things like number of cars you have is used to judge the success and failure of an individual instead of his or her contribution to humanity as is done in other developed climes.

This has pushed several young people into living above their means trying to outshine one another in the absurdity of flaunting perishable wealth which cannot enter the most decorated marble grave in the world where we will all enter at the end of all this.
