Reports this week by some national dailies had indicated that an undergraduate of the institution was shot dead at the temporary campus of the university in Ugbor, Benin.
However, while reacting to the report, vice chancellor of the BIU, Professor Ernest Izevbigie regretted that the report was filled with distorted information, advising journalists to always do their findings before putting pen to paper.
Putting the record straight he said a former student of the institution was killed in a community not far from the university, emphasising that the deceased was an ex-student of BIU and that he was not killed within the premises of the university as widely reported.
He said, “The incident occurred on May 26, 2017, outside the university, not at the university gate or campus as previously reported. The university has ended the 2016/2017 academic session since May 12, 2017 and remains closed.
“Three persons have been identified of which one of them, Mr Oluwatobi Samuel Lawal Igioh (deceased), was a graduate (former student) of BIU, while the two others are not students of the university based on database information.
“It is our understanding that violence erupted between some individuals living in the community around the university that day at about 11.00p.m and gunshots were fired, leading to the death of Mr Oluwatobi Samuel Lawal-Igioh, a 2015/2016 Business Administration graduate of the university.
“Two other persons, Michael Ofeimu and Donald Akpabio, were injured.”
He added that the University remained calm during and after the incident and that there was nothing on ground to suggest any imminent threat to the lives of staff and students.
